The End of Woke Culture?

Wokism has deeply permeated the younger generations and has even influenced the older ones. I can attest to that.

I see many people excitedly announcing the end of the woke era. They base this on "signs from above" such as Trump's victory, Trudeau's resignation, the failures of socialism in Europe, the resurgence of the right, Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter (taking the platform away from progressives), Mark Zuckerberg's announcement about abandoning verification and cancellation on Facebook to mimic X's model, the decline of Disney and Netflix after flooding their platforms with woke films centered on "diversity"—featuring empowered women making decisions, a mandatory presence of black and gay characters (often as main leads), and remakes of classic films altered to align with the woke ideology of diversity, feminism, inclusion, equality, and other such ideals. In other words, Hollywood has turned into a kind of American producer of Peruvian-style films: productions where the priority is delivering messages to raise awareness about the environment, vulnerable groups, and historical memory rather than telling a marketable story. The difference is that, in Peru, this is done with public funds. Big brands that embraced the woke culture through bizarre advertising—highlighting their environmental commitment or support for LGBTQ+ causes instead of promoting their products' merits—are also declining. This is something we experience in Peru as well. Let's remember how Alicorp replaced its "Negrita" brand with the Quechua monstrosity "Umsha," a name no one understands, or the campaigns launched by companies in support of Pride Month. People confused their work with woke-style progressive activism. I am not convinced that this is truly the end of woke culture. I think that, as a cultural phenomenon, wokism has deeply penetrated recent generations and even affected previous ones—I can attest to this. Wokism thrives on oversensitivity, which is why it resonates with the so-called "snowflake generation," those who can't handle criticism and are quick to take offense. These are the young people who have absorbed woke campaigns about the environment, animal rights, and the "oppressed" groups such as women, black people, LGBTQ+, and indigenous communities, among others. Today, they are vegans, environmentalists like Greta Thunberg, and animal rights advocates of "fluid gender," rejecting the classic values of the West, including democracy and Christianity. This culture is not foreign to us. We experience it daily. I constantly encounter them on social media, dictating rules of conduct and correct thinking, such as: You can't call anyone "mongoloid" because it offends children with Down syndrome. You can't call anyone "crazy" because it offends people with psychiatric conditions. You can't call anyone "hysterical" because it offends women. The list of woke rules would be endless. Beyond this, there are also those who, swayed by oversensitivity, fall into the woke trap without even realizing it. Among them are the teary-eyed anti-bullfighting advocates, shedding tears over the supposed abuse of a defenseless 500-kilo bull with two sharp horns capable of piercing the matador—the "abusive" matador who faces the bull's charge with a dangerous red cape, letting the animal pass mere centimeters from his body. The same anti-bullfighting advocates who celebrate when the matador is gored and wish for his death. That's how sweet these bull lovers are, all while enjoying their skewered meat and beef stir-fry, childishly justifying that in slaughterhouses, bulls are killed without the spectacle. Woke culture has affected us. It will be difficult to eradicate it from society, primarily because wokism is part of human folly, and eliminating that won't be easy.
